great story and great advise, but I don’t entirely believe in luck. That’s just me tho. She did land on a good job but I give credit to just working and giving things time. It takes a lot of hard work to get what you want and get to where you want to be.
Sometimes it takes years to land the position you want. Your dream job doesn’t just fall from the sky. You gotta work for it.
Even with making connections, you should stick with friends and peers that are willing to help you and encourage you to be the best person/artist you can be. Your behavior towards people will matter a lot especially when working in a team. Be honest with your interests, your ambitions, your work, and yourself. You should never feel forced to put on act or pander or gain the approval of anyone that won’t put any effort for you. Find the right people for you, even if it’s only 3 out of 30. At least you can count on them!
And maybe you can animate, storyboard, design, and all that jazz. But can you work consistently for 5 days straight (or 7 if you’re me)? Can you work even if you’re unmotivated? When you have a job and are working in a team, you are expected to meet deadlines. You also gotta swallow your pride to take the criticism and be open-minded. You gotta communicate and be realistic. Your work ethic is just as important. Don’t kill yourself but challenge yourself. I wouldn’t say I have the best work ethic (work nearly 24/7, juggling projects, deadlines still tough)…. but HEY don’t be me!!! There that’s my advise.
And keep developing your skills. There’s no such thing as reaching a peak. You may sit on a chair all day (or stand if you’re insane) and stare at a screen, but you’re always gonna learn new things. That’s the fun of your career! Show off your work on social media. Listen, twitter and tumblr may be stinky but they are an effective way for people to see your art. And make a demo reel and/portfolio!
And for god sake be nicer to yourselves when it comes to money. This is for freelancers, work-from-home artists (ME), etc. I understand if you start out small when you’re just beginning, but if you’re gaining more experience and attracting some attention, try to give yourself a good rate. Working very hard and receiving a good paycheck is the best feeling in the world because you earned it. Forosha and I may look back and laugh at the times when we ate ramen packs and in-n-out, but we sure as hell don’t wanna repeat that! Almost everyone I know, including us, went through being poor until they reached some opportunities.
Things can feel struggling at first, but if you keep working hard you can eventually overcome the hardships in life. A prestigious art school can help some people but it’s not for everyone. Portfolios and demo reels matter most in the end. Work hard for the things you want, don’t be a dick, learn to talk to people socially and professionally, keep growing, cut yourself some slack, and have fun!
Forosha did those things and look where she is now! Maybe luck was a factor but I’m sticking only to working hard and being patient. That’s what I think so there! Alright I’m done kissing ass and blabbing like a goon back to work. Good luck to you kids!
I was also kidding on the stand-up desks, I have one too! Never said I wasn’t crazy. And I’m exaggerating a little on only eating ramen packs. I also had gum.
Oh yeah and don’t be a memester
